How To Use Social Bookmarking to Your Advantage

Social bookmarking is a method to save your bookmarks of web pages on the internet, as opposed to storing them on a particular computer as Favorites. Doing so enables you to access your favorite websites anywhere, from any computer and even from your mobile phone! These bookmarks are usually public accessible though they can be saved privately or shared within certain networks. Internet users can share bookmarks with one another who has the same common interest. This allows you to benefit from the insights and research of other users.

As people bookmark resources that they find useful, you can take advantage of the "ranked" resources without having to do much of search using search engine which might end up with thousands or millions of results. I believe you wouldn't want to analyze each one of the million results yielded that picked by a computer if given shared bookmarks by other users who have found it to be relevant, useful, and beneficial.

With millions of blogs and websites competing for the attention of internet users, social bookmarking can be of great help in getting your website or blog noticed. Social bookmarking has proved to be one of the techniques used by "gurus" to promote website and drive traffic.

Register for a free account with any of the top social bookmarking sites like Digg, del.icio.us or Furl. When you have done so, check out the Tools section to add an icon that let you integrate the bookmarking feature into your site. It allows your visitors / readers to bookmark your blog or website easily.

For example, if a visitor likes your website and is a member of the social bookmarking service ‘Digg’, then he/she can click on the Digg icon on your webpage and this will lead them to the Digg website where they will have to log in in order to bookmark your website. After that, your blog post, article or website will appear as a bookmarked URL. It also gives visitor the ability to post comment on your post and this can prove to be very beneficial to your website in terms of traffic.

The more people click on the social bookmarking link for your website, the more links you will have pointing back to your website. When people log on to Digg to look for posts relevant to them and find your site bookmarked, they will unquestionably visit your website to find out more. This shall increase the traffic on your website considerably. Also, as more and more people visit your website they may also social bookmark it, either on the same social bookmarking network or on other sites, both of which will lead to even more bookmarks leading back to you.

However, you shouldn’t think that your job is done by just registering yourself with a social bookmarking service. It is never enough to only paste an icon under your blog posts and expect everyone to remember to click. You must also become an active member of these social bookmarking sites.

'Active’ here means you must actively visit the social bookmarking sites and find topics that relevant to you or your online business. Bookmark them and /or add comments of your own whenever you find it's appropriate. Believe me, by doing so, you are helping to increase the traffic to your website. When you bookmark some one’s website, it is likely that they will also bookmark your site, and there should soon be a network of links pointing back to your site.
